Commodore Barry Club Dedicates Annapolis Memorial
On Friday, 9 May 2014, the Commodore Barry Club traveled to Annapolis, Maryland to participate in the dedication of the Commodore Barry Memorial at the US Naval Academy. Barry immigrated to the US from Ireland as a cabin boy and quickly rose in rank owing to his bravery and seafaring skills. Although Commodore Barry was the first commissioned officer in the US Navy, for over a century and a half there was no fitting memorial to him at Annapolis. The Club along with the Ancient Order of Hibernians and other members of the Irish American community campaigned for a memorial to fill this gap. The Club raised over eight thousand dollars to complete the mission, a Barry Gate at the Academy alongside of a dignified Memorial.
The bus departed 12 PM from Dunkin Donuts, 9243 - 4 Ave, Brooklyn with a Staten Island pick up at Clove Rd. Exit of the SIE. Upon arriving at Annapolis, members walked around the historic district and dined. The Club booked reservations for the group at the DoubleTree Hotel for Friday night.
The next morning, members attended a Mass at St. Mary’s Church and then traveled to the dedication ceremonies. Owing to the small amount of space available by the Memorial, dignitaries attended the ceremony there while six hundred others watched via live video stream from Dahlgren Hall. After the ceremonies, members enjoyed a buffet lunch in Dahlgren Hall and toured the Academy. The bus left Annapolis for Brooklyn at 3:30 PM and arrived in Brooklyn at 7 PM.
